Driving Local Energy Action in Gabrovo, Bulgaria

A new activity video from the POWER-E-COM project highlights how local energy communities are being put into practice in Gabrovo, with strong support from the municipality and local partners.

The video showcases the development of a new local energy community supported by the Municipality of Gabrovo and project partners. At the heart of this initiative is a 150 kWp photovoltaic system installed on the roof of the municipal passenger transport company.

To ensure high and stable electricity generation throughout the year, the PV system combines east-, west- and south-facing panel orientations. This design allows electricity production from early morning until late evening and improves performance during the winter months.

Beyond the energy concept, the video provides insights into the technical implementation of the installation, including:

  • carefully arranged cabling and DC panels ensuring safety, performance and aesthetics.
  • a ballast-mounted structure that avoids roof penetration,
  • specially dimensioned concrete blocks adapted to local wind and load conditions,
  • anti-corrosion aluminium structures for long-term durability,
  • an integrated grounding and lightning protection system, and
  • carefully arranged cabling and DC panels ensuring safety, performance and aesthetics

Strengthening the Energy Community in Gabrovo

The installation is part of the second energy community established in Gabrovo, founded in June 2025 and currently bringing together 59 local members. It builds on the municipality’s long-standing commitment to sustainable energy development, citizen participation and local renewable energy generation.
